I have made major strides in the Independent Study and Mentorship program. Recently, I have started my original work. I have started to brainstorm what and how to put on the handouts that I will eventually hand out to the parents of bilingual children as my final product. One of the major accomplishes that I had was getting my mentor. My mentor is Mrs. Raquel Matney, third grade bilingual teacher at Christie Elementary. I have taken large steps in my ISM journey and can not wait to go through the year with my mentor.

Mrs. Raquel Matney is a bilingual third grade reading and writing teacher at Christie Elementary. Mrs. Matney is an accomplished professional with a Bachelor in Arts in Architecture, a Texas teaching certificate, an ESL certification, and a Master's degree in Education. I am very honored to go through this year under the mentorship of such an accomplished and well rounded teacher. I honestly could not of been luckier with any other teacher. Mrs. Matney teaches half in English and half in Spanish. One week, the information is taught in Spanish, the next week the lesson is in English. This is the perfect setup for me as an ISM student. I will get experience in both an English classroom and a Spanish classroom. Another factor that makes Mrs. Raquel Matney the perfect mentor for me is the age that she teaches. Third graders are around the ages of eight and nine. This age group is a great grade where you can still have fun with the children, but they are more mature. It is a totally different experience than teaching a group of twenty kindergarteners. All together, Mrs. Raquel Matney is the perfect mentor for me.

I feel confident that I am taking steps in the rights direction. After starting my original work and getting a mentor, I am even more excited for this year. It feels like every week, I become more prepared for my future as a bilingual elementary teacher. MOving forward, I will continue to work on my original work and begin going on mentor visits.
