The Independent Study and Mentorship program is becoming more and more exciting every week. I have made great strides these past couple weeks; more than I have in a while. I have gone on my first mentor visit, improved my digital portfolio, and adding a large percentage of information on my original work.
My first mentor visit was on December 14th, 2017. I went over to Christie Elementary to observe the last part of the day. The class was learning about poems in Spanish. It was fascinating to see how similar the class is to my third grade year, which was a standard English only classroom. As Mrs. Matney read the poem out loud, the class followed along. Then, they went through it again looking for rhyming words. Finally, they got in pairs and continued reading it. Mrs. Matney used this time to pull pairs up to the teacher table and have them read the poem aloud in front of her. She then gave them advice on how to improve their poem skills. This was great to see the progress the class made. The lesson started off with them listening and ended with a few students reading the poem individually aloud in front of the class.
After this mentor visit, I began really working on my original work. So far, I have added in the information for reading. The handout I am making for my original work is for the information form December 6th to December 10th. The information I have added in the reading section is over first and third person point of view. I spent time making an activity that the students can do to practice these skills. I also added a key to encourage the parents to help and check over their work. Moving forward, I will add information from writing and math along with additional resources like apps.
I have made great progress in the Independent Study and Mentorship program and I am extremely excited to move on. As the Mentor Showcase approaches, I am filled with not only eagerness for this night, but nervousness. The upcoming weeks will prepare me greatly for my future and I can not wait.
