The Independent Study and Mentor ship program continues to get more exciting each week! This week we prepared for the year by completing the final draft of our resumes and practicing making code calls to professionals. Week five of this program included activities that made it feel less of a high school class, and more of a grown up, mature, once in a lifetime experience. This weeks activities gave a glimpse of how amazing this program is and how it will prepare me for my future. Making resumes, buying a professional suit, and practicing code calling all played a part in taking me one step closer to being fully prepared for the weeks to come.

One activity we did this week that really outshines the rest was when we practiced code calling at the end of the week. Not only did I learn how to professionally and effectively speak to an adult in the bilingual education field, I learned how to improve my interpersonal speaking skills. When we went into the hall to practice code calling with partners, I began to realize how what you say can affect the future. If someone does not make a good first vocal impression over the phone, there goes the chance of being able to meet up for interviews. This fact is very important to understand as a ISM student because in the upcoming weeks, we will be making a multitude of first impressions that will either make or break the opportunities this program provides.

After this week I wholeheartedly believe that because of this program, I will end the year with the resources and knowledge I need to begin my life as an adult. ISM is truly an once in a lifetime experience that teaches a select group of high schoolers necessary skills that will provide them for their future. Each week this class begins to get better and I can only imagine how great it will get.
